  Prologue

One year ago – Chicago, Illinois

Heller Enos sat at a table outside the cafe and stared at her. She was beyond gorgeous in a simple, natural way that gave her a girl-next-door air. But those curves and the flirty glances she’d given him said she could be a little minx with the right man. He decided he was the right man. She was getting fucked by him and eventually she would be shared with his younger brother, Kale.

Her name tag said Danielle. One of her gabby coworkers had divulged her last name to him. It was Hartwell. Well, soon it would be Enos. That is, if she was as good in bed as she was beautiful, and as sweet as she seemed to him ten years ago, the first time he’d met her.

A decade ago he’d seen Danielle walking through the pouring rain on a back road out in South Dakota. She’d had a suitcase with her and her distorted expression said she was crying. Her car had broken down, so he’d given her a ride to the airport. They’d made small talk and she’d eventually confided in him that a man she loved had proposed to her and she’d turned him down because she also loved his brothers.

Heller never watched soap operas, but he’d been pretty sure he was looking at one. He’d been sympathetic to the doll, even though her situation sounded crazy and fickle. Who was judging, though? He went both ways and had always said he wanted a woman to share with his brother and a man all to himself. Kale felt the same. They shared women, but had different taste in men and preferred to have their little bottoms to themselves.

The waitress, Danielle, finally came over to him. Would she recognize him?

Probably not. It was years ago and he had an exceptional memory of faces.

“How are you doing today?” she asked pleasantly.

“I’m doing well. Thanks for asking. How about yourself?”

“I’m good. I’ve seen you here before.”

“Yes, ma’am. I didn’t have the good fortune of being in your section, though.”

She bit her lip in an obvious endeavor not to beam stupidly at his flattery. He liked this one.

“That’s nice of you to say. What can I get for you?” she asked.

  “What do you recommend?”

“Well, for starters, you might want to move inside since it looks like it might rain.”

He peeked up at the overcast sky. “I don’t mind getting wet.”

  “The wind might
blow everything around.”

  “Doesn’t bother me either.”

A gust of wind blew napkins everywhere.

“Oh no, the environment!” She threw her body across the table in a mad effort to keep them from blowing away.

  He snickered. “The environment, huh?”

She giggled, blushing adorably as she straightened up and smoothed the wrinkles out of her dress. “Sorry. Do you need a few minutes?”

“A club sandwich is fine. Do you have liquor?” he teased.

“I wish. Just water, soda, and iced tea.”

  “Water’s fine.”

  “I’ll be right back.”

He watched her walk away, almost a strut, like she wanted his attention. Well, she most definitely had it. He’d been coming here lately, checking her out.

When Danielle returned with a tray bearing his plate, a gust of wind chose that moment to blow, making her dress cling to her legs and flip a bit in a breathtaking Marilyn Monroe impression. She even had the blonde hair to complete the fantasy. Now she had to marry him.

“Oh, my word.” Her cheeks were stained with pink as she set his plate of food down. “I’m sorry you had to see that.”

  “I’m not.”

Heat made her eyes glimmer with suggestion. “I’m sure. Is there anything else I can do for you?”

“Yeah, you can give me your phone number.”

“In case you want to leave feedback about your lunch?” she joked.

“That’s cute, babe. I want to spend some time with you and you know it.”

Her chest heaved a little, hands trembling like he’d gotten her worked up good. Disappointment made a surprising show on her face as equally as arousal did. “I would love to spend time with someone like you, but I can’t. I have a boyfriend.”

  “Lucky bastard.”

  She smiled. “You’re sweet.”

“You should dump his ass and be with me instead.”

“Well, that wouldn’t be very nice to him. I mean he could totally get someone else since he’s a good man and attractive, but I don’t want to hurt him.”

“You’re obviously not satisfied or you wouldn’t be so hungry for me. You had no problem breaking that one guy’s heart. Don’t waste your time on this loser.”

She froze, looking nervous. “What guy?”

Heller bent his arm and rested it against the back of his chair to better focus on her. “That guy you told me about when I gave you a ride to the airport years ago. South Dakota, remember?”

Her mouth fell open. She was speechless for several seconds.

“I’m glad you got over that,” he said. “Now we can be together.”

  “That was you?”

  “That’s right.”

“Oh, my God.” Her shaking worsened. “What are you doing here? How did you find me?”

“Relax. This is just a coincidence. It’s not like I went looking for you. I’ve been biding my time, the same as you.”

“I haven’t been biding my time,” she said indignantly. “I’ve been living my life.”

  “Well, obviously not.”

  “What’s that supposed to mean?”

He finished chewing before answering. “You said you’d love to go out with me, but your boyfriend’s stopping you.”

“Maybe I was just flattering you.”

“I don’t think so. You want me as much as I want you.”

Her flushing cheeks gave her away. “Somebody’s arrogant.”

“You don’t love your boyfriend and apparently the attraction isn’t as strong as it could be. That’s not living. You should be with somebody you love, or at the very least, someone who does it for you in bed. That’s where I come in.”

“Who do you think you are?”

  “Heller Enos.”

“I’ve heard of you. My brother mentioned your name in a phone call years ago. Pastor Brodie’s youngest son outed you or something.”

“Yeah, my family left Stone River because of bigots. I’m bi. Does that turn you on?”

She blinked rapidly, cheeks pinking. “I don’t see how it matters one way or the other when I can’t go out with you.”

“Can’t, huh? I told you, you want me. You’re not living, sweet cheeks. I can change that for you if you have the courage to be with me.”

“Oh, brother. You’re a heartbreaker. I can tell. I’ve heard about you and your family. You’re members of the Princes of Hell motorcycle club in South Dakota.”

“Guilty as charged. What’s that got to do with anything?”

“It’s an outlaw gang. I’m not going out with a criminal.”

“Actually, you are. Gavin Donnelly is bad news.”

Her eyes widened. “How do you know my boyfriend’s name?”

Heller stopped chewing, realizing his mistake. “I enjoy research.”

  “You spied on me.”

  “Not you. Him.”

  “Why?”

“I wanted to make sure he was good enough for you. He’s not. You’re better off with me. You should leave him before you get hurt.”

  “You’re a stalker.”

“I’m just looking out for you. Gavin has ties with the Mob.”

  “No, he doesn’t.”

He stared her down. “Are you sure? I mean, are you absolutely certain beyond the shadow of a doubt that he’s an upstanding citizen? He’s never been out late at night, taken mysterious trips, or had a load of unexplained cash lying around? He doesn’t have shady friends?”

He could see the doubt in her eyes as she processed the information.

“I’ve done some bad things—stuff we don’t have to discuss, but I’ve never killed anybody. Can your mobster boyfriend say the same?”

  “I think you should leave.”

“I’m eating. You should leave him before you end up seeing something you’d rather not. What happens if you piss him off? Is he like me, rough around the edges but would never hurt a woman, or is he a killer who would damage you big time if you cross him?”

She turned to head back into the cafe.

  “You know I’m right, Danielle.”

  * * * *

A month later, Danielle Hartwell sashayed over to the handsome, bald stranger who sat at a table in the dimly lighted club watching her. He looked familiar. As she strutted toward him in her scarlet corset and matching thong, and red thigh-high stiletto boots, she recognized him and immediately slowed her pace. It was Heller Enos.

He waved her over when she halted completely.

Instantly she felt naked despite her holiday lingerie and the pound of makeup she wore. She went over to him.

  “What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to buy a dance...in the VIP room,” he said in a husky tone.

She swallowed. Of course he did. How the hell was she supposed to stay focused when the mere sight of him unhinged her? He was the most muscular man she’d ever seen and he looked so damned masculine with his dark eyes that undressed her, his tattoos, and facial hair. He smelled like a man and the fragrance of his cologne was intoxicating.

“I could give you a lap dance out here.”

“I want you alone,” he said hotly.

Her pussy moistened despite her embarrassment that he’d seen her this way. She used to be such a good girl, but that was before she’d moved here to Chicago, before Gavin. Thinking about him made her shudder. Not in a good way.

“Okay. Let’s go, then,” she said shakily.

Heller followed her into one of the champagne rooms. He dwarfed her at what was probably an impressive six feet, five inches tall. He walked inappropriately close to her and she felt his body heat pouring over her like steam.

“You smell nice,” he told her. “I like your hair curled like that.”

  “Thank you.”

Once in the room alone together, he sat down on the red couch.

  “You look nervous,” he said.

A wicked smile hovered behind his practiced self-restraint. In t
ruth, she was surprised he had any.

“I’m not nervous. I do this all the time.”

“Be real with me, babe. I’m not a customer, though I will pay you for this little convo we’re gonna have.”

  “You want to talk?”

That was a relief, and confusing.

“Why don’t you sit on my lap?”

He patted his strong thighs and she went weak in the knees. Slowly, she made her way toward him.

  “Straddle me,” he murmured.

The hushed command made her hotter, wetter. She did as she was told, hoping he didn’t feel her damp panties through his jeans. She sat on his legs, but then he pulled her closer and she felt the bulge between his thighs. Her breath caught and she felt his private heat through the skimpy thong.

He gave her a cocky smile as he played with her curls. “I like that you’re not pretending with me. You look at them and you see dollar signs. With me, you want it. I can feel how much you do.”

She lowered her eyes, trying to control her erratic breathing. “You’re hard.”

“That’s ‘cause I want you. Tell me what happened with Gavin.”

Her stomach went cold. “You were right about him. He’s an acquaintance of the Mob.”

  “Break up with him.”

“I want to, but I have to wait a little bit so he doesn’t think it’s because of his criminal status.”

“You’re smart. Just don’t wait too long. After you leave him, you can move in with my brother and me.”

She lifted her head, connecting their gazes. “What?”

“Kale and I have been thinking about buying a house in McKenna Downs. If you’re gonna be my woman, I’m gonna share you with my brother. It’s just the way we do things.”

“You want to have a threesome with me?”
